How Does CBD Help the Body – and in Particular Aging and Wrinkles?

CBD is known as a phytocannabinoid. It is one of around 100 various cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. The body naturally produces its own cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids, throughout the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. The endocannabinoids in the body are neurotransmitters, and they bind with cannabinoid receptors throughout the body and brain while being responsible for regulating equilibrium and a multitude of internal functions that includes sleep, appetite, mood, hormones, immune system, fertility, reproductivity, pain sensation, memory and more.

Cannabinoids bind with the CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout the brain and body, and CBD affects both of these receptors when it is introduced into the body. The endocannabinoid system is unique because it functions multi-directionally. In other words whether the body has a lack of cannabinoids present or a surplus, the ECS finds a way to make up for this and regulate functionality. Sometimes the ECS cannot produce the right amount of cannabinoids needed, though, so outside phytocannabinoids can be introduced to improve functionality. That is why components such as CBD have been so successful in the past.

What Causes Aging to Appear Visible?

Aging is very much a biological process, and there is scientific reasoning for why exactly skin becomes less firm and with a greater amount of visible lines and wrinkles over time. After the age of 20, the skin produces 1% less collagen every year. Collagen is responsible for keeping the skin firm and strong. Skin becomes thinner and more delicate. Our skin is covered in tiny oil glands, and with age these too stop producing and lead to drier skin that shows age more noticeably. Elastin levels also decrease, which means that the skin has a lower elasticity level and isn’t as capable of healing itself. All of these factors internally that generate aging are collectively known as “intrinsic aging.”

Extrinsic aging is also an occurrence, and this involves environmental conditions that affect how our skin looks and behaves over time. These factors include, but are not limited to, external pollutants, sun damage, lifestyle choices, skin exposure and more. The environmental factors only add to the loss of collagen and elastin, which of course lead to more wrinkles, fragile skin, sun spots, deep lines and other marks. Interestingly enough, though, extrinsic aging is responsible for about 90% of how our skin ages, while intrinsic aging is less impactful, standing at just about 10% of the cause.

How can CBD help your skin?

Science has shown that not only is CBD a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants help to halt the aging process by reducing free-radicals and the damage that they can do to the skin. Free radicals cause collagen to break down faster, so ultimately antioxidants are also helping to slow down the process of collagen loss, keeping skin looking more youthful, firm and strong, even over time.

The lack of the skin’s ability to produce as much oil from its tiny glands is also a part of why it becomes dry and fragile with age, causing fine lines and wrinkles to become more noticeable and apparent. A study released in 2008, though, actually expressed a connection between endocannabinoids and oil excretion in sebaceous glands.

It is possible that this connection explains why CBD can benefit  skin, and help it to look more naturally refreshed.

Lastly, CBD is said to have anti- inflammatory properties which helps to relax the skin and calm it down which helps your skin as well.
